Every year 26 Jan is celebrated as India republic day. Republic day is very important for all Indians. Every Indian participates in the celebration of republic day. This year the republic day is on Sunday. In this article, we will discuss what is republic day? what is independence day?

Why We Celebrate Republic Day?

Republic Day is celebrated every year in India on 26 January. Republic means that the citizens of the country have the right to elect their leaders to lead the country. India became independent on 15 August 1947 from British rule however the Constitution of India came into force on 26 January 1950. since then we celebrate Republic Day every year. Republic Day is a national holiday in India.

Republic day is celebrated in all the schools and offices by hoisting the national flag. a big celebration takes place in New Delhi on the occasion of the republic day.

Citizens decorate the houses and offices with tricolor balloons and decorative materials. the enthusiastic atmosphere is seen in the whole country. people pay tribute to freedom fighters who sacrifice their lives for the country’s freedom.

Why date 26 January chosen for the celebration?

Republic Day of India 26th January is a very popular national celebration. This event marks the proud founder of the Republic tradition of one of the largest democracies in the world. Republic Day is meant to honor the date in which the country’s Constituent Assembly adopted the Constitution specially framed for India on 26th January 1950.

The newly drafted Constitution of India came to be enforced by way of replacing the Government of India act 1935. since then this day is celebrated as the Republic Day of India.

LATER Some years a national event with a public holiday declared in all states of the country. the Indian National Congress declared Pune Swaraj or complete independence of the country from foreign rule. this declaration enjoined the members of the Congress as well as the band of Indian nationalists to fight for the independence of India and it was also decided that this day shall be celebrated as the Independence Day of India.

Later when India got its independence on 15th August .it was decided that the Constituent Assembly would enforce the Constitution on 26th January 1950 though it was adopted on 26th November 1949.

The need for a constitution?

India got its freedom from British rule on 15 August 1947. the freedom of the country was brought about by the bloodless and peaceful resistance envisioned by Congress.

On the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi who championed the way of non-violent protest of a kind and scale. that was unprecedented in history when India was declared as the constitutional monarchy. but still, India did not have a permanent Constitution .therefore on 28 August 1947 the drafting committee was established under the leadership of dr. BR Ambedkar.

The constitution is enforced the drafting committee submitted a draft of the Constitution to the assembly on 4th November 1947. Assembly organized a series of sessions to discuss the Constitution of the process. That stretched over 166 days was spread over two years 11 months and 18 days.

All these sessions were opened to the public copies of the Constitution following several deliberations and modifications. The assembly consisting of 308 members prepared to handwritten copies of the Constitution one in Hindi and the other in English duly signed by all the members.

After its signing on 24th January 1950, it was enforced throughout the nation two days later on 26th January 1950.

Difference Between Independence Day and Republic Day

As discussed earlier, the Indian Constitution came into effect on 26th January 1950. That is the main reason behind the question. Why we celebrate Republic day.?

On August 15, 1947, India won its independence from the British. So for remembering the freedom fighters, we celebrate the Independence day. It is a very important day for all Indians to celebrate.


On Republic Day, flag hoisting ceremonies and parades by armed forces and school children are held in different parts of the country. The grandest and most important of these parades is held at Rajpath in New Delhi, which showcases a multi-hued image of the country’s rich cultural heritage and military prowess. This parade is presided over by the President of India.

One of the main functions of the Republic Day Parade is to pay tribute to the martyrs who have sacrificed their lives for the country and to confer bravery awards on military persons, citizenry and children for showing courage in the face of adversity. The Prime Minister of India first lays a wreath at the Amar Jawan Jyoti at India Gate, in memory of all members of the armed forces who gave up their life for the country.

After that, there is the 21 gun salute, unfurling of the National Flag and singing of the National Anthem. Next, awards such as the Paramvir Chakra, Ashok Chakra, and Vir Chakra are presented to gallantry award winners. The parade begins with winners of gallantry awards saluting the President in open military jeeps, followed by the display of various tanks, missiles and other equipment added to the arsenal of the military.

After this, is the march-past of different regiments of the armed forces, police, Home Guards and National Cadet Corps. The President of India, being the Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Armed Forces, takes the salute. This is followed by a vibrant parade comprising tableaux from different States and cultural dances by patriotic school children.

Children who have won National Bravery Awards ride past the spectators on colorfully decorated elephants. These children are honored and awarded by the Indian Council for Child Welfare for performing outstanding deeds of bravery and selfless sacrifice. The Republic Day Parade is concluded by daredevil motorcycle riding and a flypast by Indian Air Force fighter jets over Rajpath, as spectators look on with their hearts filled with pride.
